A decent night’s drinking! Wines of the week

A recent small dinner party for six recently had me reaching into the wine cupboard for a few bottles I wondered about. Every one of them was a treat. You may not find the vintages now, but later ones are available.

Left to right @Lustau’s Emilin is a terrifically smooth, fruity sherry that even tasted of grapes, who knew? This is one of the bottles everyone got their camera out to photograph. In Ireland available from Mitchell & Son.

The Meandro was a perfectly balanced example of what the Duoro does well. I was glad I kept the 2009 for some years. We drank some over the years. It’s perfect now. In Ireland available from Mitchell & Son.

Chateau Saint Eulalie from the Languedoc was the one wine I had kept for too long. The magnum we drank last year was far better, so don’t leave it too long –about four or five years is ideal. Try one of each of the range on offer. I can never decide which I like best. Worth a visit when in the area to meet the owner/winemaker who knows her stuff and has some 80 year old vines which she judges the use of very well. From Mahon Lee and Karwigs.

Also from Karwigs, Sipp Mack Riesling never disappoints and was ideal with our mousse made from Sally Barnes’ smoked tuna.

My favourite Albarino is this one from Fefinanes in Rias Baixas, Spain. More elegant than most, it won’t overpower food, as many do. In Ireland from Smith & Whelan.

The Pato Frio from the Alentejo region of Portugal improved in the bottle in just 3 months and is fuller and more interesting now. From Kevin O’Hara who has lots more Portuguese whites worth trying.
