My happy author Liz Nolan and her husband Joe took me, Bill and book designer Tony O’Hanlon to Kai after the launch of Liz’s wholefood/vegetarian cookbook My Goodness in March. It was the treat of the year so far with spanking fresh ingredients used with flair and emphasis on local produce. The crab had great depth of flavour and was served with garden pickle, Sumac lamb chops were served with baba ganoush and saffron sunchoke, while green pancakes had chilli feta and greens. Silver hake sparkled and was served with braised green lentils, chorizo + aioli, roasted monkfish had asparagus and wild garlic. Portions were decent, but we had to taste the chocolate flourless cake served with honeycomb ice-cream, the rhubarb with custard ice-cream, the cheeses served with quince and crackers.  All impeccable. A memorable meal I was determined to replicate the flavour combinations of at home, but haven’t got around to yet. Prices are reasonable at €8-€10 for starters, €17.50 – €25 for main courses and €6.50 – €8 for desserts. A must when in the West of Ireland.
